My .xinitrc was simply this:
#!/bin/sh
xscreensaver -no-splash &
sawfish &
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch xfce4-session
Worked. Well...to be honest I'm not sure about ConsoleKit
(ck-launch-session)...that piece only started working after switching
to MDM (from wdm).
