Yeah, they’re reasoning is that a game could crash (or other possible scenarios) and leave the display in the wrong mode or the icons squished in the corner. Which is something the system software should be able to manage like Windows does. But there’s not much we can do to convince them of that. I could have sworn that UAC prevented applications from changing display settings if the current user wasn't an Administrator.
Regardless, if I read that post correctly, it seems like they want to prevent applications from mucking with the display settings unless authorized to do so. -Dan On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 4:43 PM, Trent Gamblin <trent@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Not sure what you mean, Windows doesn’t need UAC to go fullscreen so how is that relevant? This was once a problem with Windows but they've fixed it by introducing another annoyance: UAC. In effect, that freedesktop.org post is advocating for some form of Linux-equivalent to UAC authorization prior to engaging in mode setting. -Dan On Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 4:33 PM, Trent Gamblin <trent@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Just seems like excuses for a badly designed desktop. Windows has done mode switching perfectly for a long time now, never messes up the desktop, why can't it be done on Linux?

Right, I feel developers are forgetting about games on Linux. If they kept games more in mind, then maybe Linux would actually start to get traction on the desktop, but no... Maybe we should protest a bit more, but I wonder if it would help any.
I was checking a bit if wayland/weston tried to solve better than X, this but it's just as bad really
See this comment on a port of xrandr to wayland:
"For standard applications, I believe the intention is that any modesetting they do will be done in a very controlled manner through the shell." --Jason Ekstrand
(http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/wayland-devel/2014-February/013487.ht ml)
So actually, things might even be worse. Mode setting will not be directly available without root permissions, and we'll have to beg the shell (window manager) to set the mode for us and hope that it really does mode set for us and not just give us a full screen window in stead. Meh...
Kind Regards,
B.
