These are some real-world results from make check-translation:
make ISOLANG=it CHECKED_FILES=it/learning/fundamental.itely
check-translation | wc -l
7518
make ISOLANG=it check-translation | wc -l
7518
make CHECKED_FILES=it/learning/fundamental.itely check-translation | wc -l
1
