I bet you 20 timbits you did
  export PATH=/place/you/installed/texlive/
instead of
  export PATH=/place/you/installed/texlive/:$PATH

your .profile (or .bash_profile, or .bashrc, or whatever) will
probably end up having a bunch of commands like

  export PATH=/opt/local/bin:$PATH
  export PATH=/place/you/installed/texlive/:$PATH
  export PATH=$HOME/usr/bin:$PATH
     (the place you install texi2html if 1.82 isnt' in macports)


That's why I was suggesting not messing with texlive 2009, but
instead installing the full texlive from macports.  But now that
you've install texlive by itself, it makes more sense just to set
up your PATH correctly.


You know, maybe we should recommend that osx users *also* use the
virtual machine.  I mean, the client is free, and downloading a
700-meg ISO image is still less than the 1+GB download that is
texlive... all this fussing around is terribly disheartening for
new potential contributors.
