Mmmhh, with this information I can't be sure which TeX distro you have,
but I guess it might be teTeX via MacPorts... if it is, I highly
recommend you to install a recent TeX distro with bugfixes and new
features rather than investigating why an old and no longer maintained
TeX distro doesn't work.

Just grab and install TeXlive 2009 in a directory well separated from
the rest of installed programs, e.g. /usr/local/texlive; you can
download it through an automatically-selected mirror from
http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/texlive/Images/

Make sure to install all the package groups you need for all your usages
of TeX (TeXlive is nearly an extensive distro, so this should't be a
problem) Then just put at the end of ~/.bashrc (or whatever the rc file
of your shell is)

PATH=/usr/local/texlive/SOME/SUB/DIRECTORY:$PATH
export PATH

Then if you're too lazy to exit and start a shell in a terminal again,
do

source ~/.bashrc

Then, if you need for some reason to disable TeXlive 2009, you only have
to tune the PATH like above, or comment out these two lines.

HTH,
John
