I did something like this on may make.conf:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY=""
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/portage"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/portage-proaudio"
Where portage-proaudio is the name I gave to the overlay directory.
