By the way, regarding the potential loss of information when using
references between PRs, tickets, commits etc. on GitHub: The best way to
avoid this may be to ensure that everything relevant is in the merge commit
message. But GitHub does not offer a means to edit this message, like you
can do it when squashing commits on the command line. GitHub just uses the
default commit message (listing all commit comments). This preserves all
information but is not always what you would want because it can result in
a lot of noise.
But that's probably a compromise required when using tools like GitHub:
They cannot really offer the full git functionality, but just a subset. On
the other hand git cannot offer a ticketing system etc.
