I was finally able to do some additional testing:
- non MMX routines that convert to 15-bit: ok
- 8-bit to 8-bit conversion routine: crash

The bug in the latter is probably my fault. I have commited the attached
patch that fixes it and simplifies the code in the process.

Bob, I did also some preliminary testing with your optimizations: some are
worth implementing, some aren't. We could further discuss them after the
feature freeze.
