In that case I stand completely corrected. If it's in the main Ardour
build could it could/should be used in the pro-audio overlay. However
this would take an ebuild developer to make some changes which is what
you have asked for so nicely.

I am not an ebuild developer, but I thought one of the advantages of
portage was that ebuilds are relatively simple to implement and
maintain. If that's true then maybe yhey aren't all that hard to
modify for something like this? If you were game you could create your
own ebuild by copying the existing Ardour stuff (just a couple of
files) and then modify and test it. If it works then submit it. If it
doesn't maybe you can ask some questions here or on Gentoo-user and
figure it out without too much pain?

Anyway, I apologize for not totally understanding the state of this
build support in Ardour. I *seldom* ever look at that stuff. It bores
me silly.
