Hi Colin,
linux-2.6.17-rcX is a 'release candidate'. When patched with Ingo's RT
stuff it becomes linux-2.6.17-rcX-rtY which is a 'release candidate
with real-time support'.
2.6.17, a mainline/stable kernel, was just released. Previously the
2.6.17-rc(1,2,3,4,5,6) release candidates were for testing and
feedback to the kernel developers. Personally I don't normally run a
release candidate until the kernel developers are sounding like it's
pretty stable. That usually means -rc4 or higher in my experience.
(Which is not that much experience!)
I have been running linux-2.6.17-rc6-rt3 (a release candidate kernel)
for the last few weeks, and before that the very late stages of
linux-2.6.16-rt25(a stable kernel) when the AMD64 support got
finished.
Hope that helps clear up a bit of the confusion.
Cheers,
Mark

Hmmm... then I was probably thinking of a 2.6.17-rt release candidate, since
I am sure I have had a 2.6.17 kernel running on my ~amd64 proaudio install
for about a week now. Unless I am completely misremembering? If there were
specific issues with -rt1, then I probably just missed them.
I'll probably try it out soon, anyway.
