Well, it is a tradeoff. I have read an interesting article about
autotools here:

It states (among other things):
Quite frankly, Microsoft has some of the best tools on the planet for
Windows software development. If I were developing a Windows software
package, I’d use Microsoft’s tools exclusively. In fact, I often write
portable software that targets both Linux and Windows. In these cases, I
maintain two separate build environments—one for Windows, and one based
on the Autotools for everything else.
On the other hand, if not many people are active supporters of
autotools-powered Allegro, then it is probably really better to stick
with cmake... I was just probing how things are :-)
