I agree. I'm sure it's a useful addition, but not something I want to add
between beta 3 and RC1.

Good point. I think I asked Peter Hull what he thought would be the best
idea and he suggested just sticking with /usr/local. That's probably fine
for people with a *nix background, but people (just) coming from Windows
are faced with a double problem here: running a new operating system and
using a library that doesn't use the normal convention for the platform.
I'm not sure how to tackle that one.
