I agree that this would be a sensible starting point. Didn't you already
have some code implemented (albeit in C++) for this?

Yes. I also think that while we should only break the API once between
*stable* releases, as long as it's WIP releases I think it's ok if the new
API can change, especially while we're in a transition phase and the old
API is still there.
