I would only prefix new functions and variables. Since the API is 
designed for an overhaul anyway, I think the best thing to do would be 
to redo the API with al_ prefixes while leaving the original API alone 
and completely useable. Then at some predetermined point, we drop 
everything non al_ and then we have the prefixing and a new, clean API.

I've mentioned that before on allegro.cc, but didn't seem to get a very 
favorable response.
