In your first mail, you were talking about the 'latest WIP'. The latest WIP
(3.9.36) has got a pre-generated makefile.dep for all non-Unix ports, so
that 'make depend' is not needed.
Are you not using a CVS snapshot instead ?

What kind of error does the linker generate ?

Your trick with the Windows linker might be a little hazardous...
