Click 'get source' although (and I am not using git on my mac per se - I was just trying to help you) if you do 'get source' it simply creates a new dir called lilpond-git and downloads the source again, but then I guess at that point you have the repository set to this new dir
I experimented with it lily-git and couldn't see how to tell it to use my original lilypond dir that i had to download to install the script in the first place :)
However once you have get source, it seems to work fine and I can create a patch
