The packaging scripts in 1.8.0 are broken, you'll atleast need 1.8.1.
Also, if not building from GIT, simply change "3.0 (git)" to "3.0 (quilt)" in
debian/source/format in the Sawfish source-tree.
3.0 quilt requires <package>_<version>.orig.tar.*, eg:
sawfish_1.8.1.orig.tar.gz (just as known from older dpkg).
Also, the depedency issue with librep & co should be fixed in 1.8.1 unless I'm
missing something. (If I do, tell me and I'll roll-out 1.8.2).
