I got into a discussion about this on #gentoo irc.  According to the person I spoke with, the midi flag was removed as now midi is always built into alsa-libs.  According to him, the fix for other packages (and should work for pro-audio overlay) is to remove the check for the midi flag on alsa-libs.  I modified the ebuilds on my system for ardour 2.999 and one other one and they built without a problem, but I have not tested.

It will do nothing for this issue because they dropped the midi flag from all
their alsa versions.
