I had exactly the same problem with 2.6.16-rt22 on amd64 (it would hang at exactly the same point that you mention).

I could never figure it out, but I can say that the same kernel revision *does* work on x86.  My "solution" has been to dual-boot, running a separate x86 install for pro audio work.  But I can certainly understand how this isn't the ideal workaround.

I then copied the kernel by hand, edited grub.conf and rebooted.

The kernel hung at loading the IO schedulers.

Are there any known problems in that area? Any workarounds?

Rebooting into 2.6.16-gentoo-r2 worked fine.

I may try an earlier kernel if I get a chance later today.
