Well, fact is that SDL1 development has been pretty much ceased these
days, and people query for new features like scaling-to-desktop
resolution or OpenGL accelleration which are much more easier to do
with SDL2. So SDL2 is the way to go. But for SDL2 support, the code had
to be changed quite a bit, so that we end up in quite a bit of code
duplication here. Hatari is only a small project, and we just can not
afford to do too much double code maintenance here. So getting rid of
features that nobody uses anymore, and that cause trouble in this
area, like 8-bit host color depth support, should really not hurt but
rather help us to focus on the more important parts instead.

I think I did not understand your point correctly. First you say that
Hatari should not get rid of old features (i.e. 8-bit color depth
support which has been discussed here), but then you say that it does
not have to support old video modes anymore? Sorry, now I am confused.
