It's best if you think of VDI mode as using a separate graphics card.
Pure GEM apps typically work with it, non-GEM apps typically not.

Default setting are most compatible.  If in doubt, try without your
own settings (e.g. "hatari -c empty.cfg") and just set the correct
machine type & TOS.

And of course it's not just compatibility settings which cause problems
with SW, some SW requires specific TOS version, another specific amount
of RAM etc.
