It would be interesting to know what that "trick" was.

The open implementation in all char drivers in Linux hold the
"big kernel lock" (BKL ?). So putting an infinite loop in
there is going to cause havoc. The watchdog, or something it
triggers, may well get stuck waiting for the BKL to clear.
