It seems to me like we'd have to check gconf for the setting even if we can guess the WM. Not sure that's even feasible... definitely don't want to have to link GNOME libs to a game.

How about checking the name of the window manager and see it it's not
"compiz"?
But then again it might be compiz in legacy mode.
