I don't think the DOS code was ever properly converted to be 100% C only. lots 
of allegro still makes some assumptions about running on a DOS like system, 
all that selector and "ds" stuff along with video and input drivers that 
contain a large portion of asm. A lot of legacy stuff was kept, and not 
totally purged when we started implementing C only mode.
