It solves half of the problem. I've got a solution for the other half, which Thomas H has confirmed works OK. However, it doesn't work if the user changes desktop colour depth whilst the app is running, and it should be able to. (certainly I can change from 16 to 32 bit and back without problems) I've asked him for some more information on what _does_ happen.
IMO, even if I can't solve it completely, it will be 'good enough' for 4.2.0.
