and with the current sentiments about leaving DOS and Visual Studio 6 behind,
4.2 will probably be my last Allegro...

DOS will only be dropped if no one writes code to support it. Personally I'd not mind to see DOS support continue, but in a sleeker fashion. Like with VGA+VESA only.. none of that Xtended mode crap and possibly even VBE/AF, as that's rarely used, even useful, next to VESA 3. For sound, just mantaining GUS/SB-compatible drivers would give a good range of DOS sound support. Slightly limited joysticks (keep the SNES-alike stuff, generic gamepads, etc.. but if you're going to be using more exotic hardware, you'd probably be better off using Windows or Linux anyway).

As for VS6, the VC7 compiler is available for free. You could probably just build the lib with the free tools, and use VS6 for your programs (assuming you could make it produce VS6-compatible libs). If VS6 conformed to the standards Allegro would need, I don't see any reason it shouldn't be supported.. but I don't think it is, and we shouldn't be held back by it (just like we shouldn't need to continue to support GCC < 3.2, assuming no major platforms are that far back).
