Hmm.. yeah, they don't seem to be that common. The Xlib reference I 
found for cursors ( http://cs.wwc.edu/~davija/XLIB/05-02.html#P87_2204 ) 
seems to indicate only monochrome cursors are possible. However as it 
says on the bottom of the page, it was last updated 5 years ago. It 
might be helpful to find something newer.
