One thing I am unsure of is wether or not the driver names returned by Windows are plain 7 bit ISO strings, or UTF8 and if they should be
MSDN defines the string as CHAR.i guess you can presume 7bit ISO, as the midi functions you are using date back to when M$ presumed 7bit ISO unless otherwise stated.
On my system those strings appear as follows: MPU-401 Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth LAN 1aj.
