Technically, it could also be done in X11, at least in Gnome some
applications do this, instead of going fullscreen. And something like
GFX_AUTODETECT_WINDOWED_MAXIMIZED would make sense in all windowed
environments - and just start the window maximized (or is that what you
meant?).
Hm, MINIMIZED, BORDERLESS, FOREGROUND, DOCKED, TRANSPARENT, and so on
could also be useful at some point. Probably A5 territory..
