You're probably right: the vast majority of programs will run faster with
the current solution.

Yes, the code needs testing before the WIP on BeOS and Windows and I think
we should postpone any modifications other than bugfixes. I would also like
to add a working support for 8-bit desktops on Windows (currently the
Windows driver doesn't fill the colormap so the color are a little bit
screwed up).
