Yes, that's likely -- playing with Linux programs which set the
SB mixer volume, the sound is pretty much off by the time the
slider goes down to half way, and I'm only really interested in
using the top quarter of the volume controls. I think it's
probably a hardware thing.
I think there's a way to tell Allegro to use its software master
volume control instead of using the hardware one, but I don't
remember what it is.
Regarding the way this changes the hardware volume and does not
put it back on exit (I don't remember whether this was cleared
up, so sorry if this is repeating), I think on many cards it's
not possible to find out what the current level is, it's only
possible to set it. Maybe this is a bit of an antiquated
reason, though, since for Windows and Linux it surely is
possible to read the current mixer settings.
