640x480x8 is already the GFX_SAFE_IDed mode for Windows but it is almost
never reached because 320x200x8 either works or hangs the computer.

Actually, the culprit is ...(guess who)... Microsoft ! Up to DirectX 3.0,
the Standard VGA mode is simply not supported by DirectDraw. According to my
docs, it was introduced with DirectX 5.
