For reasons I'm not entirely certain of the CPPFLAGS patch you committed is causing
me problems. In this particular build setup there is already one defined
and as a result it simply isn't picking yours up.

I would have thought the version in a makefile would always take priority, but it
appears not.  Changing the variable name  to anything else fixes the problem.

The other nasty in the current build scripts is that don't really allow for cross compiling.
In my case I'm ok, because both the host and target are Linux based.
