The only advice I can give is based on my experience:

Stay far away from Tascam US-428. I spent 3 years and 4 motherboards
trying to make this POS work with Linux including help from the author
of the drivers..

i love my Zoom H-4 (ebay $160) it just worked

For midi I have a $20
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html
which works fine (If I reboot I have to unplug and replug.. dunno why
but not a huge deal)
