Aaargh, it was stupid user error. I found this, long forgotten
hack in my /etc/profile, back when the ardour README used to
advise doing this:

# autoconf rationalization for ardour, et al.
export ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /usr/local/share/aclocal -I /usr/share/aclocal"


It hasn't caused me a problem before because I haven't rebuilt a
box in a long time and my system had a symlink at /usr/local/share/aclocal .

You are to be forgiven. This is one of the weaknesses of emerge. Notes
on how to build are in the README but you can't get the README without
building the app. You start, the build fails, and you don't have the
README to read.

It would be very cool, I think, for there to be some way of using
emerge to get build instructions from the tarball before trying to
build and having it fail, but alas... ;)
