I bump this bug again, because it's still there.
It seems he doesn't like that $(WX_CONFIG) --version
the wired-cvs ebuild seems to be Ok, instead

Is it really necessary to do so?
My useflags for wxGTK are:
[ebuild   R   ] x11-libs/wxGTK-2.6.3.2  USE="X joystick opengl sdl
unicode -debug -doc -gnome -odbc" 0 kB

and unicode is correctly installed on the system
