I don't but surely I can save that state "shift keycode has been pressed". So if I receive empty text afterwards, I can safely ignore it and process the SHIFT code to Atari. And vice versa, if I receive empty text, I can ignore it because an 'invisible' key event is about to be received. 

This of course assumes that SHIFT does produce empty text input and that the events don't come in a totally random way.
