You were right! Thank you -- on behalf of the user. According to

.... only ".hdv" is accepted as extension for IDE images, whereas ACSI
images can have the extensions ".bin" or ".hdv".
User confirms that IDE images work with a file named "hd.hdv".
Now this leaves *me* wondering: Doesn't the macOS file selector show the
acceptable file extensions? On the user's screenshot

I don't see any indication that only .hdv is allowed.
Pretty user-unfriendly, imho. Windows handles this much better: actually
showing the extensions.
