I think what he is talking about is doing that on Hartai side, not inside the emulator. So instead of writing to a file there, write to a pipe instead. I have added similar funtionality not so long ago to Aranym.

 

Main drawback is that you have to specify some timeout after which the pipe should be closed, otherwise the lpr will wait for data until you shut down Hatari.
