Alright, here's a 32/64 bit SDL2 build I just made. It works and sounds fine here on a 2009 Macbook Pro (Core 2 Duo) on 10.11 - also when launched in 32 bit mode.

If I've understood things correctly the SDL2 lib I build does not have the aliasing problem (might just be because I build v2.0.4 release and not current though?)
If this release is excessively slow on older OS versions then it would seem to be incompatibility between SDL2 and older OS X versions.
Hi,
sorry for being late to the party, it's been one of those weeks at work.
I've tried the new September 18 build on a few systems:
* 2006 32-bit Macbook (OS X 10.6.8)
It works wonders now! Magnitudes faster than the build from August 27.
* 2009 64-bit Mac Pro (OS X 10.11.6)
Like before, works great, the bug with repeating audio buffer when
resizing or dropdown menus is gone.
* 2011 64-bit Macbook Pro (macOS 10.12.0)
Yep brand new macOS Sierra, and Hatari runs like a champ, both the
development version and 1.9.0.
Whatever you have changed since the August build, it has turned a complete
waste of an Hatari build into a perfectly usable one for 32-bit Macbook.
Great stuff Troed.
One small visial thing I noticed on 10.12 is that the menu bar is darker
on the development build than the old 1.9.0. See picture:

Not that it matters, if anything it felt a little fun with a subtle change
after all the years looking the same :-)
Here's a crappy video shot with my el-cheapo phone, but you'll see Hatari
running smooth on the 32-bit Macbook.
