Note that in this music demo, samples already have a low volume (if you just listen to the wav file with Audacity for example), so maybe the fact that the sample don't use the full 8 bit range is fooling the filter and you get an even lower volume in the end ?

The primary samples (kick/bass, snare) do in fact use the full 8-bit range, and were normalized beforehand to make sure of this. These are the actual sample files used:

A hex-view of the files confirms this.

Some of the samples however do not use the full volume range (e.g. open hi-hat) and this is deliberate, to ensure the sounds are properly relative to one another in magnitude.
