This happens because inside etrax kernel the generic i2c support isn't
implemented. So the axis has developed a some special syscalls and
Geert Vancompernolle imporved this work as decribed here
http://foxlx.acmesystems.it/foxlx_acmesystems_it/00010/LinuxI2CDriver.pdf
I have integrated his work inside openwrt and is now available also in
crisos choosing the appropriate symbol inside kernel.
As show in https://dev.openwrt.org/browser/trunk/target/linux/etrax/patches-2.6.25/500-i2c_gvc.patch?rev=14462
the symbol you need is called ETRAX_I2C_GVC
Please report your experiences I don't have the necessary hardware to test it.

Feel free to announce your work in "User projects" inside the wiki (
