[AD] al_assert

Could we mark al_assert as not returning (i.e.  __attribute__
((noreturn)) in gcc) ?

Also it's quite complicated and deals with assert handlers and nested
asserts - I would have thought it just needs to print a message and
abort() as soon as possible.
