Also it's quite complicated and deals with assert handlers and nested
asserts - I would have thought it just needs to print a message and
abort() as soon as possible.

I agree. This was all left in from A4, but seems rather useless. Does someone who uses MSVC (it's what all this stuff supposedly was for) find it useful?
