Hmm... guess I missed your original message... no, it's not the correct way
to fix the problem (see other message).

IMO, it is. Those two variables are internal to Allegro and shouldn't have been exposed in the first place. I've looked at the code in setup.c and it should still work as expected (I don't know why they were exposed in the first place, set_config_int'ing the two config vars and resetting the sound should work.. no need to modify the two vars directly). I do remember this issue coming up before.. at least a version or two ago, and I thought I fixed it then.
