Absolutely. However, there are two problems: libpng and zlib have a more
restrictive license than Allegro does, and it adds a dependency to
Allegro. One of the nice things about Allegro currently is that you
basically don't need anything else to get it installed (not exactly true,
but close enough).

I think most people would be satisfied with using .bmps for that.
Although, I agree the `official addon' or a list of suggested packages with
links from Allegro's download page would be good. Works better than a note
in the docs.
