In short, autoconf 2.1x is not included anymore in the most recent Linux
distributions (e.g SuSE). As 2.1x and 2.5x are not backward compatible, we
decided to require the newest one.
Even the complex GCC configure machinery is going to be converted to 2.5x
despite the many hurdles.
