Then pass by reference. It will require some changes to the proposed
API, but it's not ugly - I use such a structure in my GUI system. The
only thing is that it's not quite as straightforward as pass by value,
especially for people who have not worked with such an interface before
(did time() confuse anyone else when they first started C?).
