Two thoughts: you should be fine with the source compatibility in my
opinion, as most programs (the portable ones) will not be using these
constants in code. Config files will have to be changed, but that's an
easy thing to do and not a big hassle. I wouldn't worry about the ABI
compatibility, as long as you put it in the WIP version and not in the
4.0 series. The WIP (4.1) series isn't ABI compatible with 4.0, is it
supposed to be ABI compatible with itself?

I'd go for the changes and not worry too much about it, but you, Eric
and others will have to make the decision I think.
