AFAIK your changes are going to be in the 4.1 release, which will
transform someday into 4.2.0. For this change you can provide backward
compatibility *documented* defines for the API. The ABI is only compatible
at the 3rd number revision level, so people will have to recompile anyway
to link against 4.2.x.
Unless the above is wrong, it means there's no problem with your changes.
